I was in Haiti with the Canadian element in JACMEL from Jan until March 2010. My job was to provide intelligence support to our Commander. This was interesting because I managed to actually learn something about how different my job was compared to a complex/conflict environment (this is ahrd for an intelligence person to admit haha). I quickly realized that understanding the culture and not just paying lip service to it, of the people in our AOR was the primary concern. So in a nutshell I am impressed and relieved that there is so much to learn. I have decided also to incorporate deep cultural awareness in my work in humanitarian situations and would like to follow this role for the rest of my military career. I also realized the advantages of reading pieces like this and gaining the anthropological views of an environment. Thank you for your thoughts.
