We are always looking for anthropologists and graduate students interested in writing for and engaging with a general readership and public audience. Interested writers, editors, and technical staff have the choice of writing for the print magazine and/or website.

Writing for the print magazine

Anthropology Now is a unique, peer-reviewed publication for research-based articles,  book, film and exhibit reviews, photo essays and commentaries that are less focused on discussion within the discipline and more inclusive in sharing anthropological knowledge and perspectives with the well-informed general reader. We assume our audience will know a bit about what anthropology is, but not a contributor’s specific topic or viewpoint. We are looking for magazine-style narratives that incorporate vivid ethnographic detail and straightforward, jargon-free context and explanations. Like most magazines, we don’t encourage extensive footnotes or citations. Anthropology Now provides opportunities to inform readers about emerging perspectives on important issues, and thus contribute to public understanding of the human condition.

We publish in April, September and December, with rolling submission deadlines for completed drafts. For example, a draft based on a proposal approved in November and received in mid-February would appear in the September issue.  Our articles are usually in the 3,500-4,000 word range, plus illustrations. If you would like to contribute, please send a clear 200-word statement (not an abstract) outlining your proposed article and your thoughts about photos or other art to illustrate your piece.

Contact General Editor Rylan Higgins at rylan.anthro.now@gmail.com and Executive Coordinating Editor Maria D.Vesperi at vesperi4anthronow@gmail.com to submit your proposal or for further details and guidelines.

Writing for the website

Take a look around the website and see the kinds of things we publish. Test out a new article you are working on, publish your photo essay, put up a short video, or do something completely different. We are always looking for web features and content.

Please contact Executive Coordinating Editor Maria D. Vesperi at vesperi4anthronow@gmail.com or First Associate Editor Emily Martin at anthronow@icloud.com for queries about writing for the website.

Have a truly out-of-the-box idea?
